Medial Plantar Artery Flap for Reconstruction of Weight-bearing Sole Defect- A Series of Ten Cases

Weight-bearing areas of feet are at risk developing ulcers due to various reasons like a neuropathic foot in diabetes mellitus, acute trauma, post-tumour excision etc., Various reconstructive options have been described literature from split-thickness skin graft free flap. This case series reports 10 patients with sole defects. Out patients, seven had heel defect and three the plantar aspect forefoot defect. For defect, authors used proximally based medial flap as tool while for distally (reverse) Medial Plantar Artery (MPA) was used. The most common cause postdebridement diabetic five cases, postmelanoma postsquamous cell carcinoma one postelectric burn case. Flap size ranged 5x5 cm 10×7 cm. All flaps offered stable, durable, cosmetically acceptable cover. No patient recurrent ulcer during follow-up period. Partial necrosis managed conservatively. MPA offers excellent cover which is sturdy, medium over i.e., weight-bearing part heel.
